Wheaton extends winning streak to six with 15-8 win over Mount Holyoke

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. – Senior Sydney Ferguson (Jamestown, R.I./North Kingstown) scored four goals and junior Kristen Palmer (East Dorset, Vt./Burrn and Burton Academy) potted three as the Wheaton College women's lacrosse team defeated Mount Holyoke College 15-8 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday afternoon at Keefe Field.

The win extends the Lyons winning streak to six and moves them to 9-3 (2-1 NEWMAC) on the season – their highest win total since 2006. Senior Hailey Colburn (Concord, N.H./Concord) tallied seven points on two goals and five assists to move past Therese Ross (1983-86) and into sole possession of third-place on Wheaton's all-time scoring list with 238 points. Freshman Kirsten Kilburn (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) paced the Lyons (5-5, 1-2 NEWMAC) with three goals and an assist.

Kilburn opened the scoring with her 25th of the season 19 seconds into the contest to give MHC a 1-0 lead. Colburn set up Fergsuon at 27:52 and senior Katie Powers (Ashburnham, Mass./Cushing Academy) at 20:39 to put Wheaton in front 2-1.

After sophomore Brianne Phelan (Quincy, Mass./Quincy) tied the game at two with her 15th of the year at 18:15, Wheaton closed the half on a 5-0 run to take a 7-2 lead into halftime. Ferguson netted a pair of goals while Palmer, Colburn, and junior Amy Moreira (Bristol, R.I./Mount Hope) each scored once. Wheaton outshot Mount Holyoke 17-8 through the first 30 minutes and forced 13 turnovers.

Wheaton extended its lead to 9-2 on goals by Colburn and Melanie Sharick (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) in the opening 4:11 of the second half. Mount Holyoke junior and leading scorer Molly McDonald (Milton, Mass./Milton Academy) picked up her first point of the afternoon with her 28th goal at 24:45, but the Lyons answered with goals by Palmer, Ferguson, and sophomore Charlotte DeSantis (Darien, Conn./Darien) to stretch their lead to 12-3 with 20 minutes remaining.

Later in the half, goals by Palmer and sophomore Leila Mills (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) gave Wheaton a 14-4 lead, and the lead never dipped below eight until the final seconds of the contest.

"I thought we played really well," said Lyons head coach Emily Kiablick. "We had an injury towards the end of the game that affected us, and we seemed to let up a little bit. Our goal is to play a full 60 minutes and be consistent. We're heading in that direction, but we need to make sure we stay composed and don't get rattled by anything."

Wheaton finished the contest with a 33-18 edge in shots, won 16 of 25 draw controls, and forced 25 turnovers – led by Palmer with four and DeSantis and Colburn with three apiece. Sophomore Devon Soucier (Avon, Conn./Northwest Catholic) collected a game-high seven ground balls and freshman Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) made six saves to improve to 8-2.

For Mount Holyoke, McDonald finished with two goals and an assist while Phelan notched two goals. Junior Liz Malenfant (Nantucket, Mass./White Mountain School) recorded eight saves in defeat and sophomore Annabel Barrett (Williamstown, Mass./Mount Greylock Regional) registered five ground balls.

The Lyons return to action on Tuesday when they head to Babson Park for a 7 p.m. contest with the Beavers of Babson College. Mount Holyoke hosts Smith College Tuesday at 6 p.m.
