Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass. - Senior Hailey Colburn (Concord, N.H./Concord) scored three goals and dished out three assists in Wheaton College's 15-9 loss to Babson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse action Tuesday night.
Sophomores Charlotte DeSantis (Darien, Conn./Darien) and Leila Mills (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) each potted two goals for the Lyons (9-4, 2-2 NEWMAC), who saw their six-game winning streak snapped. Senior Colleen Mulligan (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) and junior Jameson Spang (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) combined for five goals in the second half to help Babson (8-2, 3-0 NEWMAC) remain perfect in conference play.
Sophomore Devon Soucier (Avon, Conn./Northwest Catholic) anchored the Lyons defense with four caused turnovers, seniors Alexandra Noyes (Freeport, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) and Sydney Ferguson (Jamestown, R.I./North Kingstown) added three caused turnovers apiece, and freshman goalkeeper Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) totaled 10 saves and a game-high five ground balls.
For Babson, Mulligan led all players with six points (5-1-6). Spang, meanwhile, notched four goals, three ground balls, and three caused turnovers while sophomore goalkeeper Julie Baharestani (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) recorded nine saves to earn the win. Sophomore Misha Beatty (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) chipped in with three goals, senior Bridget McCurdy (Weston, Mass./Weston) picked up a team-high four ground balls, and senior Trisha Babson (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) contributed one goal, two assists, and a game-high 10 draw controls.
The two teams exchanged goals for the first eight minutes of the game, with Colburn and Mulligan each scoring twice during that stretch. Babson then snapped a 3-3 tie with a free position goal by Beatty, and Spang converted a spin move in front to make it 5-3 in favor of the hosts with 19:35 left in the first half.
Wheaton cut its deficit back to one when Coburn drove the left side and fed a wide open Mills in front to make it 5-4 at 15:37. However, the Beavers responded with a 3-1 run over the next 11 minutes behind free position scores from Beatty and Mulligan and a goal by Spang at 4:37 that gave the hosts an 8-5 lead. DeSantis and Babson traded unassisted goals just 27 seconds apart before Mills struck on a free position with 1:48 left in the half to cut Babson's advantage to 9-7 heading into the break.
Babson outscored the Lyons 6-2 in the second half. Mulligan opened the scoring with back-to-back free position goals in the first seven minutes. After Colburn tallied her third of the game to cut Wheaton's deficit to 11-8 eight minutes in, junior Taylor Kralovenec (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) netted another free position strike to ignite a 3-0 run that gave the Beavers a 14-8 edge with 7:10 remaining in the contest. The Lyons got their final goal on freshman Melanie Sharick's (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) shot into the upper right corner at 6:02. Spang converted a free position just over a minute later to cap the scoring.
Each team fired off 29 shots while Babson won 15-of-25 draw controls. The Lyons forced 22 turnovers.
Wheaton returns to action on Thursday with a 4 p.m. contest at Tufts. Babson travels to Mount Holyoke for a noon contest on Saturday.
