NORTON, Mass. – Senior Hailey Colburn (Concord, N.H./Concord) scored a school-record 11 goals in Wheaton College's 24-8 win over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Sunday afternoon at Keefe Field.

Colburn also dished out two assists to tie her own school-record for points (13) in one game, which she set earlier this week against Salve Regina. The Lyons outscored the Pioneers 10-0 in the second half to improve to 5-3 (1-1 NEWMAC) on the season. Defensively, they held Smith's leading scorer, senior Meaghan Fileti (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes) without a point.

Sophomore Leila Mills (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) picked up a hat trick for Wheaton while freshman Melanie Sharick (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) tallied four points (2-2-4). Freshman goalkeeper Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) finished with four saves to earn her fifth win of the season. In the process, she lowered her goals against average (GAA) to a conference-best 9.97.

The two teams combined to score nine goals in the first nine minutes of the contest with Smith holding an early 5-4 lead. Sophomore Becky Bracken (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) and freshman Mckenzie Hessel (Portland, Ore./Wilson) each potted a pair of goals for the Pioneers while Colburn recorded two for the Lyons.

Wheaton closed the half on a 10-3 run and took a 14-8 lead into halftime. Colburn scored six goals in the final 18 minutes to reach the 40-goal plateau while Sharick found the back of the net twice. Hessel added two more for the Pioneers before the half closed. The Lyons outshot the Pioneers by a 2-to-1 margin (24-12) through 30 minutes and forced 11 turnovers.

The Lyons scored three times in the opening 10 minutes of the half, the last two off the stick of Mills, to build a 17-8 lead. Sophomore Charlotte DeSantis (Darien, Conn./Darien) notched her 20th of the season with 18:31 to go to push Wheaton's lead to 10  goals (18-8), and the defense blanketed the Pioneers the rest of the way. Colburn added three tallies down the stretch to break the previous record of 10, which was accomplished by Therese Ross (1983-86) on two occasions and stood for more than 20 years.

"This is a really good conference win," said Lyons head coach Emily Kiablick. "Smith has improved drastically. They had a good scout on us, and their game plan was very effective in the first half. We made adjustments in the second half and stopped making the same mistakes over and over again."

Wheaton finished the afternoon with a 42-19 edge in shots, forced 21 turnovers, and converted on seven of its eight free position attempts. Sophomore Devon Soucier (Avon, Conn./Northwest Catholic) collected a game-high seven ground balls and forced a game-high four turnovers.

Hessel finished with four goals to pace Smith. Junior Alina Pechacek (Andover, Mass./Philips Academy) recorded 13 saves between the pipes and senior Sofia Naknikian-Weintraub (Eugene, Ore./South Eugene) registered a team-high four ground balls.

The Lyons return to action on Tuesday when they head to Fitchburg State for a 7 p.m. contest. Smith hosts New England College Monday at 5 p.m.
