VIDEO: Highlights from Wheaton/Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. - Senior Hailey Colburn (Concord, N.H./Concord) scored five goals and picked up an assist to lead the Wheaton College women's lacrosse team to a season-opening 14-12 win at Roger Williams University in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon.

Classmate Sydney Ferguson (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) added three goals and an assist for the Lyons (1-0), who won their season-opener for the second-consecutive season. Junior Kristen Palmer (East Dorset, Vt./Burr & Burton) and sophomore Leila Mills (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) each tallied a goal and an assist, and freshman Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) made seven saves to earn her first collegiate win.

Trailing 10-7 entering the second half, the Lyons defense held the Hawks to just two goals over the final 30 minutes of action. Offensively, two goals from Powers and one each from Ferguson and senior Katie Powers (Ashburnham, Mass./Cushing Academy) to open the half gave Wheaton an 11-10 lead with 20:22 to go.

After freshman Deven Machette (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) answered for the Hawks to tie the game at 11, Ferguson gave the Lyons the lead for good with a man-up goal off a feed from Colburn with 7:13 to go. Nineteen seconds later, Mills potted her first of the year to give the Lyons a two-goal cushion. Freshman Melanie Sharick (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) added an insurance marker with less than four minutes remaining to help secure the win.

"We started off a little slow. It took us a little longer than I thought it would to work out the kinks," said Lyons head coach Emily Kiablick, who saw her team fall behind 3-0 early in the contest. "Our goal this season is to be consistent. Regardless of how things are going, we want to make sure we're putting forth the same effort for 60 minutes, and that's something we did today. That made the difference in the second half. When Roger Williams started to get tired, we were still going."

The Lyons outshot the Hawks 33-24 - including 16-7 in the second half. They also forced 14 turnovers and committed just three of their own. Sophomore Devon Soucier (Avon, Conn./Northwest Catholic) led Wheaton field players with three ground balls, and both she and junior Amy Moreira (Bristol, R.I./Mount Hope) won four draw controls. Colburn was 3-for-4 on free position shots while Soucier and sophomore Hayley Bright (Cumberland, Maine/North Yarmouth) each caused three turnovers.

Machette paced Roger Williams with five points (4-1-5) while senior Danica Delia (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) recorded five points (3-2-5). Freshmen Kelsey Rahilly (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) and Kristen Pingree (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) each scored two goals.

The Lyons return to action on Thursday when they travel to Fitchburg State for a 4 p.m. contest. The Hawks (0-2) host Eastern Connecticut State Thursday at 4 p.m.
