Strong defensive effort propels Lyons past Bears, 12-4

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - Senior Hailey Colburn (Concord, N.H./Concord) and sophomore Leila Mills (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) each scored three goals in Wheaton College's 12-4 win over Bridgewater State in non-conference action Thursday night at the Edward C. Swenson Athletic Complex.

Senior Sydney Ferguson (Jamestown, R.I./North Kingstown) added two goals for the Lyons, who improved to 4-3 with the win and 28-6-1 all-time against the Bears. Junior Amy Moreira (Bristol, R.I./Mount Hope) finished the evening with a goal and two assists and freshman netminder Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) made four saves to record her fourth win of the season.

Wheaton scored the first four goals of the game and led 8-2 after 30 minutes of play. Mills paced the Lyons with three goals and an assist while Colburn and Moreira each tallied a goal and two assists. Defensively, the Lyons held the Bears to just five shots while firing off 17 of their own. In the second half, Colburn netted her 30th and 31st goals of the season while junior Kristen Palmer (East Dorset, Vt./Burr and Burton Academy) recorded a goal and an assist.

Palmer led the Lyons in ground balls (six) and caused turnovers (three) while Ferguson won three draw controls. Wheaton finished the evening with a 29-11 edge in shots and forced 19 turnovers. Colburn's two goals bring her career total to 145, which is four shy of Meredith Hurd (2005-08) for fourth-place in program history (149). Her two assists moved her past Cole Shaw (1997-2000) and into first-place in assists (60).

Sophomore Victoria Moore (Duxbury, Mass./New Hampton Prep) started between the pipes for Bridgewater State (2-5) and made 12 saves in defeat. Senior Stephanie Lannon (Swampscott, Mass./Swampscott) was one of four different goal scorers for the Bears. Junior Sammi Salverio (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson scooped up a team-high five ground balls.

The Lyons return to action on Saturday when they host Smith at 1 p.m. The Bears travel to Fitchburg State Saturday for an 11 a.m. contest.
