Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Junior Amy Moreira (Bristol, R.I./Mount Hope) and sophomore Charlotte DeSantis (Darien, Conn./Darien) each scored three goals in Wheaton College's 14-13 double-overtime loss at Springfield College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.
Senior Hailey Colburn (Concord, N.H./Concord) added two goals and two assists for the Lyons (3-3, 0-1 NEWMAC), who saw the Pride rally from a five-goal deficit with under 10 minutes remaining in the second half to force overtime. Senior Sydney Ferguson (Jamestown, R.I./North Kingstown) also potted two goals for Wheaton.
Senior Jackie Moscardelli (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) and junior Meghan Flanagan (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) each netted four goals for the Pride (4-3, 1-0 NEWMAC) while junior Allie Davis (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) added two goals and an assist.
Wheaton (3-3, 0-1 NEWMAC) built a 6-4 halftime lead behind two goals each from Colburn and DeSantis. Moscardelli and Flanagan each scored once for the Pride, who were outshot 11-9 through the opening 30 minutes of play.
The Lyons opened the second half by scoring four of the first six goals to build an 11-6 lead with 9:03 remaining. Moreira sparked the Lyons with a goal 41 seconds into the half, and following a goal by Moscardelli 18 seconds later, Wheaton reeled off three-straight to grab a 10-5 advantage. Junior Kristen Palmer (East Dorset, Vt./Burr and Burton Academy) started the run with a tally at 27:40, followed by goals from Moreira at 22:54 and sophomore Leila Mills (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) at 23:23. Springfield answered with a goal at 21:04 to cut its deficit to four (10-6) before Ferguson's second of the afternoon at 19:04 restored Wheaton's five-goal lead.
Springfield began its comeback at 9:03 on a free position goal by Flanagan. Freshman Michelle Dorsey (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug) made it 11-8 with a goal at 8:35 before markers from Moscardelli at 7:05 and Flanagan at 1:14 cut the Lyons lead to one. With under a minute to go in regulation, Moscardelli scored her fourth of the game to send the game to overtime.
In the extra session, Moreira converted a feed from senior Devon Soucier (Avon, Conn./Northwest Catholic) to give Wheaton a 12-11 edge with 4:40 on the clock. Davis answered for Springfield at 4:04 to tie the game at 13, and DeSantis and Flanagan traded goals at 3:33 and 1:20 to bring the score to 13-13 and force a sudden victory session. Sophomore Kerstin Lindrooth (Bryn Athyn, Pa./Academy of the New Church) ended the game at 1:37 of the second OT when she took a pass from Moscardelli and beat freshman netminder Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont).
Both Springfield and Wheaton were credited with 29 shots on goal. Palmer collected a game-high five ground balls for Wheaton, which received nine saves from Ananian. Springfield sophomore goalkeeper Anne Versprille (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) made 10 saves to earn the win.
Wheaton returns to action on Wednesday when it opens the home portion of the schedule with a 4 p.m. home contest against Salve Regina. Springfield hosts Amherst Wednesday at 7 p.m.
