Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. - Senior Hailey Colburn (Concord, N.H./Concord) scored five goals and sophomore Charlotte DeSantis (Darien, Conn./Cushing Academy) tallied a goal and two assists in Wheaton College's 18-8 loss at Connecticut College in non-conference women's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at Silfen Field.
The Camels (1-3) scored four times in the opening 4:16 of the first half and led 7-1 with 12:32 to go in the stanza. Junior Libby Nichols (Baltimore, Md./Friends School of Baltimore) scored a pair of goals during the run for CC while sophomore Lowell Abbott (Manchester, Mass./Brooks School) tallied a goal and two assists. Junior Kristen Palmer (East Dorset, Vt./Burr and Burton Academy) scored the lone Wheaton goal during that span.
The Lyons (2-2) responded by scoring four of the next five goals - including three by Colburn - to cut their deficit to 8-5 with 1:59 to go in the half. Nichols potted her third girl of the half with four ticks left on the clock to give Connecticut College a four-goal halftime lead.
Senior Ashley Crutchfield (Concord, N.H./St. Paul's School) opened the second-half scoring with a goal at 26:23 that stretched the Camels lead to four at 9-5. Colburn sparked a 3-0 run for the Lyons with her fourth of the contest at 22:57 that brought Wheaton to within two goals at 10-8. DeSantis and senior Katie Powers (Ashburnham, Mass./Cushing Academy) followed Colburn's goal with markers at 21:21 and 14:44, respectively, to bring the Lyons to within two at 10-8. The Camels blanked the Lyons the rest of the way while scoring eight goals of their own. Abbott notched two of the goals while junior Bri Miller (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) added a goal and an assist.
Freshman Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) recorded 15 saves for Wheaton, which was outshot 25-21. Palmer collected a team-high 10 ground balls while Colburn won three draw controls. Junior Kelsey Burke (Atlanta, Ga./St. Mark's School) recorded 11 saves for the Camels, who received three goals each from Abbott, Nichols and Miller.
The Lyons return to action on Thursday with a 6 p.m. game at Curry. Connecticut College travels to Orlando, Fla. and will face UMass Dartmouth Wednesday night at 6 p.m.
