Box Score BRUNSWICK, Maine – Senior Hailey Colburn (Concord, N.H./Concord) potted a pair of goals in Wheaton College's 22-4 loss at No. 5 Bowdoin College in non-conference women's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon at Ryan Field.
The Polar Bears (2-0) raced out to a 6-0 lead 10 minutes into the contest and led 13-1 at the break. Junior Carolyn Gorajek (Hightstown, N.J./Peddie School) tallied six points (3-3-6) to pace the Polar Bears while sophomore Mackenzie Schleicher (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) potted three goals and seniors Elizabeth Clegg (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) and Celeste Swain (Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley) each recorded three points (2-1-3). Sophomore and Brunswick native Leila Mills (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) tallied the lone Wheaton marker through the first 30 minutes.
Bowdoin continued to control play throughout the second half and pushed its lead to 18-1 on a goal by sophomore Jordan Smith (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) midway through the half. Colburn answered with a goal at 13:30, followed by another from senior Katie Powers (Ashburnham, Mass./Cushing Academy) at 8:40. Colburn buried her second of the game with 5:50 to go.
Freshman Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) recorded seven saves for the Lyons. Junior Amy Moreira (Bristol, R.I./Mount Hope) won a team-high four draw controls while senior Alexandra Noyes (Freeport, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) caused three turnovers. Colburn collected a team-high three ground balls.
Bowdoin outshot the Lyons 23-2 in the first half and finished the game with a 34-5 edge in that category. Gorajek finished with seven points (3-4-7) while Clegg had five (4-1-5) and Swain finished with four (3-1-4). Junior Tara Connelly (Simsbury, Conn./The Gunnery) played the first 35 minutes between the pipes for the Polar Bears and recorded one save.
The Lyons (1-1) face Southern Maine Thursday at 4 p.m. The Polar Bears travel to Amherst for an 11 a.m. game on Saturday.
