Salve Regina Turns Away Wheaton, 77-61

O'Loughlin leads Lyons with 17 points 

NEWPORT, R.I. –The Wheaton College men's basketball team fell to Salve Regina University, 77-61, in non-conference action on Thursday night at the Rodgers Recreation Center.

Sophomore forward Mike O'Loughlin (Milford, N.H./Milford) led the Lyons offensively with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting (2-of-3 from three-point range), four rebounds, four steals and one assist. Junior guard Will Bayliss (Manchester, N.H./Tilton School) added 12 points (5-of-8 from the field), three rebounds and two assists while sophomore forward Jaycob Morales (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic) contributed seven points, three assists, one carom and one block.

Junior guard Patrick Dinneen (Medfield, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) tallied a career-high 25 points going 12-of-16 from the free throw line, 6-of-9 from the field and 1-of-1 from long distance. Dinneen also recorded four rebounds, four steals and three assists. Classmate Isiah Pringle (Queens, N.Y./Brewster Academy) notched 16 points (6-of-11 from the field), three assists and one rebound.

The Seahawks outrebound the Lyons, 36-30, but lost the turnover margin, 22-17. Salve Regina passed the ball effectively posting a 17-9 differential in the category and also held a 16-8 advantage in second change points. Wheaton outscored the hosts, 34-24, in the paint on the night.

Salve Regina shot 53.3-percent overall, 52.9-percent from long range and 71.4-percent at the charity stripe. Wheaton went 42.4-percent from the floor, 29.4-percent from beyond the arc, 50.0-percent at the line.

The Seahawks raced out to a 22-11 lead with 8:13 remaining in the opening half receiving a team-high eight points from Pringle during the run and five 3-pointers total among four different players. Morales responded with an old-fashioned three-point play at the 7:29 mark but Salve Regina answered with another double-digit run to close out the half for a 37-21 advantage.

Both teams came out firing in the second half scoring 40 points apiece while also shooting over 50-percent from the floor. Salve Regina went 13-for-21 from the field (61.9%) and Wheaton shot 16-for-31 (51.6%).

O'Loughlin netted 11 points to lead the Lyons while Dinneen turned in 14 points to guide Salve Regina. The Seahawks claimed their biggest lead of the night at 22 points (69-47) on a jump shot from freshman forward Brenden Fowler (North Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) at the 7:53 mark of the second half.

Wheaton (5-3, 0-0 NEWMAC) hosts Roger Williams on Saturday, December 8 in Emerson Gymnasium at 1 p.m. Salve Regina (5-2, 2-0 CCC) travels to Connecticut College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
