NORTON, Mass.- The Wheaton College women's tennis team saw its four-match winning streak come to an end on Tuesday afternoon, as the Lyons dropped a 6-3 decision to defending New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season and tournament champion Wellesley College at the Clark Tennis Courts.

In a match between two teams who have combined to win the league's last eight regular season and tourney titles, Wheaton fell to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in league play, while the Blue improved to 5-2 and 4-1.

The guests jumped out to a 3-0 lead following doubles play.  Lyon junior Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) and sophomore Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) put up the biggest fight before falling to junior Diana Granger (Glencoe, Ill./North Shore Country Day School) and sophomore Sojung Lee (Seoul, Korea/The Lawrenceville School), 8-5.

Juniors Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Pingree School) and Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen) were doubled up by Wellesley junior Erica Choo (Okemos, Mich./The Bryn Mawr School) and sophomore Joyce Chen (Sunnyvale, Calif./Valley Christian) in the second spot, while Wheaton's third doubles team lost 8-1.

In singles play, the teams split the six matches, with the Lyons winning in the first, second and sixth positions.  Cooke notched a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Granger at one, Marlowe defeated Choo by a 7-5, 6-3 count in the second slot, while senior Jesse Boggis (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) won 6-3, 6-4 at six.

For Wellesley, freshman Suzanne Barth (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill) yielded one game at five, junior Catherine Matulis (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) surrendered two games in the fourth spot, and Lee turned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Bell at three.

Wheaton breaks from dual matches this weekend as it heads to Amherst College to compete in the three-day New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) beginning on Friday.
