NORTHAMPTON, Mass.- The Wheaton College women's tennis team ran its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) winning streak to three games thanks to its 9-0 victory at Smith College on Saturday afternoon.
The Lyons improved their records to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the NEWMAC, while the Pioneers, who have played only league matches, are 0-4.
Wheaton had little difficulty over the course of the afternoon, surrendering a mere four games in doubles play and 10 games in singles action.
Junior Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) and sophomore Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) and juniors Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Pingree School) and Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen) each cruised to 8-1 doubles triumphs at one and two, respectively.
At third doubles, senior Jesse Boggis (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) and freshman Caroline DiNicola-Fawley (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) won 8-2.
Boggis blanked her opponent at sixth singles, Cooke yielded one game in the top spot, while Marlowe, Crom and DiNicola-Fawley each won 6-2, 6-0 in the second, fourth and fifth positions, respectively. Bell posted a 6-1, 6-2 triumph from the third slot.
Wheaton is back in action tomorrow with a home match against non-conference opponent Colby College at 11:00 a.m.
