NORTHAMPTON, Mass.- Wheaton College women's soccer sophomore Shelby Benoit's (Easthampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) goal with 1:39 remaining in the first overtime provided the Lyons with a 1-0 victory at New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Smith College on Saturday.

Ranked 14th in the country and tied for third in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), Wheaton extended its winning streak to six games while remaining unbeaten at 11-0-2 overall and 5-0 in the NEWMAC.  The Pioneers slipped to 5-6 and 2-3.

Wheaton, which recorded its fourth straight shutout and eighth clean sheet in its last nine games, held a 17-6 advantage in shots through regulation but had nothing to show.

To open the second half, the hosts put forward a scoring chance off a corner kick, but a Pioneer shot was cleared off the line by a Lyon defender in keeping the game scoreless.

In the 57th minute, Wheaton sophomore Gabriella Verde (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) nearly put the Lyons on the board, but her shot smacked the post.  Smith senior goalie Cody Norris (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) later turned aside attempts from freshman Julia Cipriano (Middlebury, Conn./Pomperaug) in the 63rd minute and senior Cassey Muse (Candia, N.H./Central) three minutes later.

Lyon freshman goalie Ali Hinton (Lafayette, Colo./Alexander Dawson School) made a big stop in the 70th minute, pushing a Smith shot off the crossbar and out of harm's way.  Norris denied Verde's header at 75:34 and Muse and Cipriano missed the target in the 79th and 87th minutes, respectively.

Wheaton dominated the overtime period, holding a 7-1 shot advantage in the frame before Benoit capitalized.  Just 1:40 into the extra session, Benoit nailed a post.

Hinton was credited with three saves in the shutout, while Norris finished with 12 stops.

The Lyons held a 25-7 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Wheaton returns home on Wednesday to take on non-league foe Salem State University at 4:00 p.m.
