NORTON, Mass.- The Wheaton College women's tennis team improved to 3-0 at home following Tuesday's 6-3 victory over previously unbeaten Babson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action inside Beard Field House.
Wheaton raised its season record to 4-1 and league mark to 2-1, while the Beavers, who hadn't allowed more than two points all fall, slipped to 5-1 and 2-1.
The host took two of three doubles matches, including an 8-3 triumph from junior Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) and sophomore Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) in the top spot.
Juniors Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Pingree School) and Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen) notched an 8-6 victory in the second doubles slot.
Babson's third-doubles tandem of senior Victoria Lorido (Coral Gables, Fla./Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart) and sophomore Minte Tamoshunas (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) won 8-2.
Marlowe surrendered three games at second singles during her straight-set win, while Cooke gave up just four games in a 6-1, 6-3 victory at one. Crom turned in a 6-3, 7-5 win in the fourth position, and senior Jesse Boggis (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) secured a7-5, 7-6 victory during a hard-fought match at number six.
Tamoshunas cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at fifth singles, while freshman Tori Paolino (East Orleans, Mass./Nauset Regional) overcame an opening-set deficit to win 2-6, 7-5, 7-6.
The Lyons head to the western side of the state on Saturday to take on host Smith College in a league match at 1:00 p.m.
