Lyons blanked by MIT in NEWMAC match

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- The Wheaton College women's tennis team succumbed to host Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) by a 9-0 count during Tuesday afternoon's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match.

The Lyons fell to 6-3 on the season and 3-3 in league play, while the Engineers are now 7-1 overall and unbeaten in the NEWMAC at 6-0.

Junior Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) and sophomore Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) led 6-3 at first doubles before dropping a 9-7 decision, while Wheaton's second and third doubles teams lost 8-1 and 8-0, respectively.

In singles, the Lyons saw MIT post six straight-set victories.  The tightest matches took place in the third and sixth positions.  At number three, junior Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Pingree School) dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision.  In the sixth spot, senior Jesse Boggis (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) fell 6-3, 6-1.

The Lyons complete their regular season for the fall on Saturday with a home match against league opponent Clark University at 12:00 p.m.
