No. 4 MIT defeats Wheaton in NEWMAC opener for both schools, 87-54

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Seniors Anthony Weeks (Fitchburg, Mass./Worcester Academy) and Brendan Degnan (Narragansett, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) each scored eight points in Wheaton College's 87-54 loss at No. 4 MIT Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.

Sophomore Brian Grossman (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) chipped in with six points for the Lyons, who fell to 6-6 (0-1 NEWMAC) on the season. The Engineers, meanwhile, remain perfect on the season at 14-0 (1-0 NEWMAC).

For MIT, senior Jamie Karraker (Morgantown, W. Va./Phillips Exeter Academy) knocked down eight three-pointers en route to a game-high 24 points. Junior Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, N.J./Phillips Exeter Academy) had 15 points to go along with three assists, three rebounds and two steals. Sophomore Will Dickson (Dallas, Texas/St. Mark's School) stuffed the stat sheet with six points, four boards and four assists in just 12 minutes of action.

The teams traded buckets early on, with junior Cliff Desravines (Somerville, Mass./Taft School) knotting things at eight at the 16:05 mark. From there, the Engineers ran off seven-straight points over the next 3:35 to open up a 15-8 advantage.

Later in the frame, the Cardinal and Gray outscored the Lyons 16-2 to build their biggest lead of the half, 36-15. Karraker had three 3-pointers during the stretch and senior Billy Bender (The Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands College Park) capped the run with a three-ball of his own.

A layup by freshman Eddie Capstick (Worcester, Mass./Marianapolis Prep) to open up the second half brought Wheaton to within 18 (42-24), but that would be the last time Tech's advantage fell below 20 points the rest of the way.

MIT shot 54.4 percent from the field (31-of-57) and was 11-of-23 from long distance. Defensively, the Engineers forced 20 turnovers, outrebounded the Lyons 35-25, and held them to 38.5 percent shooting.

Degnan added four assists for Wheaton while Capstick recorded a pair of steals.

Wheaton returns to action on Wednesday when it heads to Worcester for a 6 p.m. contest with Clark. MIT heads south to face Coast Guard Wednesday at 7 p.m.
