SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's tennis team blanked Springfield College 9-0 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Lyons remain perfect on the season (5-0, 3-0 NEWMAC) while the Pride fall to 0-3 (0-1 NEWMAC).
Sophomore Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield) moved to 5-0 this season with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles over junior Sam Carney (Franklin, Mass./Franklin). At No. 2 singles, freshman Alex Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) knocked off sophomore Jen Cleary (Nahant, Mass./Swampscott), 6-1, 6-1.
Senior captain Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, R.I./Lincoln School) also improved to 5-0 with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles over junior Erin Woodbury (Portland, Maine/Catherine McAuley). Sophomore Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Pingree School) rang up a 6-3, 6-3 win over junior Vanessa Senecal (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) at No. 4 singles to run her season record to 5-0.
Sophomore Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen) posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles against junior Siana Green (Pomfret, Conn./Woodstock Academy), and junior Jesse Boggis (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) rounded out the singles lineup with a 6-2, 6-0 win over sophomore Sydney Streimer (Mystic, Conn./Fishers Island) at No. 6 singles.
In doubles action, Cooke and Marlow defeated Carney and Cleary at No. 1, 8-1, DiOrio and Crom rallied back from at 4-1 deficit to upend Woodbury and Green at No. 2, 8-6, and Bell and Boggis knocked off Senecal and Streimer at No. 3 singles, 9-8.
"The team showed great mental toughness as a group today," said Lyons head coach Lynn Miller. "We got off to a slow start in two of our doubles matches, but we made some adjustments and were able to come back and take all three doubles points. It's also a good sign that we won all of our singles matches in two sets as we head into our match with Wellesley. I was proud of our team's performance."
The Lyons return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Wellesley for a 5 p.m. match. The Pride host Clark Tuesday at 4 p.m.
