NORTON, Mass. - Four Wheaton College women's tennis student-athletes improved to 4-0 on the season in the Lyons 8-1 win over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday afternoon at the Clark Tennis Courts.
Senior Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland R.I./Lincoln School) and sophomores Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Pingree School), Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen), and Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian), each won their singles matches as the Lyons improved to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in NEWMAC play. The Pioneers fell to 0-2 (0-2 NEWMAC) with the loss.
Cooke posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over freshman Jordan Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) while freshman Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) notched a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles over senior Clair Oblamski (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield, East).
At No, 3 singles, DiOrio knocked off freshman Bayla Weick (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Bell upended senior Jaimi Inskeep (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville) at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-0, Crom posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over junior Eunice Zhao (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty) at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-3, and junior Jesse Boggis (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) tallied a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles against sophomore Allie Ryan (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Central).
In doubles action, Cooke and Marlowe won 8-4 at No. 1 against Dubin and Inskeep while DiOrio and Crom defeated Oblamski and Weick, 8-4, at No. 2. The Pioneers earned their only point of the afternoon at No. 3 singles, where Zhao and sophomore Julie Signell (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth Academy) knocked off Bell and junior Julia Parmakian (Gorham, Maine/Gorham), 8-4.
"This is where we wanted to be at this point in the season," said Lyons head coach Lynn Miller. "Having defeated two NEWMAC opponents guarantees us a spot in the conference tournament."
The Lyons return to action next Saturday when they travel to Springfield for a 1 p.m. match with the Pride. The Pioneers host Babson next Saturday at 1 p.m.
