Lyons blank WPI in NEWMAC opener, 4-0

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior Kaitlyn Mawicke (Trumbull, Conn./Notre Dame Catholic) registered a goal and an assist to lead Wheaton College to a 4-0 shutout win over Worcester Polytechnic Institute Saturday afternoon in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both squads.

Wheaton improves to 4-1-1 on the season (1-0-0 NEWMAC) while the Engineers dip to 1-5-0 (0-1-0 NEWMAC).

The Lyons - ranked sixth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) New England poll and receiving votes in the most recent D3soccer.com national Top 25 - got on the board at 16:05 when freshman Gabriella Verde (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) knocked home a flick by junior Cassey Musse (Candia, N.H./Central) following a corner kick. The Lyons extended their lead at 30:41 when Mawicke found a streaking Kristina Braga (Lowell, Mass./Lowell), and the sophomore deposited the ball into the net for her second goal of the season.

Mawicke dented the scoring column at 57:09 after she took a pass from freshman Lauren Corigliano (Roselle Park, N.J./Roselle Park) and placed the ball in the lower left corner. The Lyons closed out the scoring with 13 seconds remaining when freshman Shelby Benoit (Easthampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) floated a shot over sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Willer's (Penfield, NY/Penfield) head following a pass by classmate Keely Angelo (Atlanta, Ga./Paideia).

"This was a good road win for us and a good start to our conference season," said Lyons head coach Luis Reis. "We had spurts during the match where we played well and moved the ball efficiently. I was pleased with the play of our backs this afternoon."

Senior Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, R.I./Wheeler School) turned away two shots en route to her second shutout of the season for Wheaton. She was aided by a team save when Corigliano cleared a sophomore Courtney Langley (Fairfield, Maine/Lawrence) shot following a corner kick near the goal line.

Willer made seven saves for the Engineers, who saw junior Nikole Jordan (Harvard, Mass./The Bromfield School) clear a ball of the goal line seven minutes into the match. Langley was credited with a pair of shots on the day for the Crimson and Gray.

The Lyons return to action on Sunday when they host Husson at 3 p.m. WPI kicks off a brief two-game road trip Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at UMass Boston.
