CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team's 14-10 loss to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) during Monday's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season finale on Roberts Field positions the Lyons in fourth place, giving them a league tournament home game this Wednesday.

Today's teams were deadlocked at four in the opening half of Saturday's originally scheduled game in Norton before the contest was called due to unplayable field conditions, pushing the action to today in Cambridge.  Falling to 6-11 overall and 3-3 in the NEWMAC while garnering the fourth seed in the conference tournament, Wheaton will host fifth seed Wellesley College on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.  As the third seed, MIT is now 9-5 and 3-3.  

Senior Tess Meyer (Concord, N.H./Concord) provided two goals and one assist for the Lyons, while junior Hailey Colburn (Concord, N.H./Concord) and freshman Charlotte DeSantis (Darien, Conn./Cushing Academy) scored two markers apiece.  Junior Sydney Ferguson (Jamestown, R.I./North Kingstown) had a tally and two assists, and senior Marianna Marcellino (Milton, Mass./Thayer Academy) accounted for 10 saves in a little over 57 minutes.

For MIT, junior Katie Kauffman (Olney, Md./Sherwood) tallied five goals and three assists, while sophomore Laura Wacker (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep Country Day School) finished with five markers and one helper.  Freshman Sarah Ritter (The Woodlands, Texas/American School of the Hague) turned aside 11 shots in the victory.

The Engineers sandwiched five goals around a Meyer tally to take a 5-1 lead midway through the opening half.  A Wheaton tally at 12:53 brought the Lyons to within three before MIT closed out the frame with five unanswered goals for a commanding 10-2 lead at the break.

The hosts made the score 11-2 with a second-half goal 2:42 in, but Wheaton responded with three of the game's next four markers in narrowing its gap to 12-5.  Trailing 14-7 with less than seven minutes remaining, the Blue and White rallied with three goals during a 5:05 stretch to pull within 14-10 with 1:08 left.  Wheaton won the ensuing draw and DeSantis smacked the post before the Engineers grabbed the ground ball and ran out the clock.

Wednesday's contest will mark the first time the Lyons host a conference tournament game since 2008.  The Lyons defeated Wellesley by a count of 12-10 last Tuesday.
