NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's tennis team continued to make history on Sunday, as the Lyons not only reached a program high in wins with their 18th while stretching their school-best winning streak to 16 matches following a 9-0 victory over host Colby-Sawyer College on the Kelsey Courts.
Playing in its final regular season match of the year, Wheaton, which is ranked 11th in the region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), raised its record to 18-1. The Chargers slipped to 11-6.
Seniors Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, Calif./Sage Hill School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester, N.H./Central) had little difficulty from the top doubles position, as the regionally-ranked twosome improved to 19-4 as partners following their 8-1 triumph.
Freshmen Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) and Madison Hartley (Charlotte, Vt./Rice Memorial) won 8-2 at second doubles, as did senior Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, Mass./Manchester Essex Regional) and junior Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, R.I./Lincoln School) in the third spot.
The Lyons put forward a different singles lineup, with Cooke surrendering just one game in the first position. At two, DiOrio won 6-1 before leading the second set by a 3-0 count when her opponent retired. After dropping their first sets, Hartley and Van Faasen responded with victories in the next two sets to complete wins in the third and fourth slots, respectively.
Freshman Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Pingree School) blanked her opponent in the fifth position, while classmate Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen) picked up her first collegiate win with a shutout at six.
Wheaton now turns its attention to next month's NCAA Tournament, as the Lyons will serve as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) representative for the second straight year. Wheaton begins competition on Friday, May 13, against an opponent and at a location yet to be determined.
