Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Senior Brendan Degnan (Narragansett, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) knocked down a free throw with no time remaining to send Wheaton College to a 64-63 win over Bridgewater State University in non-conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Adrian Tinsley Center.
Degnan finished the contest with a team-high 16 points, the final point coming after the Bears (2-4) had tied the game at two with a pair of junior Anthony Fortes (Providence, R.I./Proctor Academy) with seven ticks on the clock.
On the ensuing inbounds pass, the Lyons drove the length of the floor and Degnan launched a long three-point attempt as time expired. He was fouled on the play, and after missing the first FT attempt, calmly sank the second to send the Lyons home with their fifth win of the season.
Wheaton trailed by five (28-23) at the half but opened the second half on a 14-2 run to grab a 37-30 lead. Sophomore Will Bayliss (Manchester, N.H./Tilton School) and senior Anthony Weeks (Fitchburg, Mass./Worcester Academy) sparked the run with six points apiece.
The Lyons stretched the lead to 10 (52-42) following a layup by sophomore Brian Grossman (Duxbury, mass./Duxbury) with 9:25 remaining. The Bears responded with a 21-11 run to tie the game at 63. Fortes scored seven of his 11 points during the run, the final two coming at the charity stripe to tie the game and set up Degnan's heroics.
Weeks and junior Cliften Desravines (Somerville, Mass./Taft School) each chipped in with 11 points for Wheaton, which forced 19 turnovers that led to 25 points. Bayliss finished with nine points and a game-high three steals.
Senior Nathan Miller (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) paced the Bears with 16 points and four assists. Senior Corey Ryser (Tewksbury, Mass./Malden Catholic) finished with 14 points and five boards.
Bridgewater State shot 44.9 percent (22-of-49) from the floor and connected on 16-of-20 (80.0 pct.) free throw attempts. The Bears also blocked 12 shots, led by senior Max Dolgin (Randolph, Mass./Randolph) and freshman Michael Lofton (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) with four apiece.
Wheaton returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Framingham State for a 7 p.m. contest. The Bears head to Becker College on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game.
