NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's tennis team improved to 6-2 on the season with an 8-1 win over Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday afternoon at the Clark Tennis Courts.
The win also moves to Lyons to 4-2 in conference play heading into Tuesday's key NWEMAC contest against MIT. Mount Holyoke dips to 3-6 (4-2 NEWMAC) with the loss.
At No. 1 singles, sophomore Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Regional) ran her mark to 8-2 with a 6-0, 6-0 win over junior Nahrhee Han (Albertson, N.Y./Henricks). Freshman Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) moved to 6-3 with a 2-6, 6-1, 10-8 win over sophomore Maya Sayarath (St. Johnsbury, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) at No. 2 singles.
Senior captain Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland R.I./Lincoln School) upped her record to 7-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles over freshman Sarah Anischik (Tolland, Conn./Tolland). Sophomore Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Pingree School) picked up her sixth win of the season by defeating sophomore Eman Malik (Karachi, Pakistan/Karachi Grammer School) in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 10-5.
Sophomore Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen) earned her sixth win of 2011 with a straight sets win over sophomore AnnElizabeth Konkel (Camp Hill, Pa./Harrisburg Academy), 6-3, 6-3. Junior Jesse Boggis (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) wrapped up singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 win over senior Sarah Moore (Piano, Texas/Piano East) at No. 6 singles.
In doubles action, Cooke and Marlowe knocked of Han and Konkel at No. 1, 8-4, while DiOrio and Crom downed Sayarath and Moore at No. 2, 8-3. Mount Holyoke's No. 3 doubles team of senior Heather Richardson (Holden, Mass./Mass. Academy of Math & Science) and sophomore Kelsey Brower (Tuckerton, N.J./Pinelands Regional) upended Bell and junior Julia Parmakian (Gorham, Maine/Gorham), 8-4.
"This match was a lot closer than the score indicates," said Wheaton head coach Lynn Miller. "We had some nice comeback wins today. This should give us confidence if we end up playing Mount Holyoke in the conference tournament."
The Lyons travel to Maine on Sunday for a noon match at Colby. Mount Holyoke hosts Springfield Tuesday at 4 p.m.
