BABSON PARK, Mass. - The Babson College women's tennis team defeated Wheaton College 5-4 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Thursday afternoon. The match was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but was postponed due to rain.
The Lyons (5-2, 3-2 NEWMAC) picked up win at the top three singles spots and No. 1 doubles. The win lifts the Beavers to 8-1 (4-1 NEWMAC).
Wheaton sophomore Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) defeated freshman Alex Freeman (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) in straight sets at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) scored a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles over sophomore Sarah Whitaker (Dellwood, Minn./St. Paul Academy). Senior captain Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, R.I./Lincoln School) rallied back to defeat senior Rebecca Stone (Dover, Mass./Dover Sherborn) in a tiebreaker, 5-7, 6-3, 13-11, at No. 3 singles.
Junior Mikaela Tamoshunas (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) defeated sophomore Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Pingree Scool) at No. 4 singles, 7-5, 7-5. Sophomore Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen) was upended at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-3, by junior Monica Mercer (Woodinville, Wash./Woodinville). Junior Jesse Boggis (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) fell to freshman Courtney Fisher (Greenwich, Conn./Convent of the Sacred Heart) at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-2.
Cooke and Marlowe knocked off Freeman and Whitaker at No. 1 doubles, 8-1. Tamoshunas and Stone defeated Crom and DiOrio at No. 2 doubles, 8-2. Bell and Boggis fell at No. 3 doubles, 8-3, to Mercer and Fisher.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday when they host Mount Holyoke at 1 p.m. The Beavers travel to Clark for a 1 p.m. match.
