Lyons advance to NEWMAC Semifinal with 5-1 win over Mount Holyoke

NORTON, Mass. – Senior Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, R.I.) was one of three Wheaton College student-athletes to post a win at singles and doubles in the Lyons 5-1 win over Mount Holyoke College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Tennis Quarterfinal match Wednesday afternoon at Beard Field House.

Sophomore Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Catholic) and freshman Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz.) also won at singles and doubles for the No. 4 seeded Lyons (8-3), who continue defense of their NEWMAC Championship against top-seed Wellesley Saturday at 11 a.m. Seeded No. 5, Mount Holyoke finishes its season 4-7.

Cooke and Marlowe rallied back from a 4-0 deficit at No. 1 singles to score a 9-7 win over junior Nahrhee Han (Albertson, N.Y./Herricks) and sophomore AnnElizabeth Konkel (Camp Hill, Pa./Harrisburg Academy).

DiOrio and sophomore Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen) also won 9-7 at No. 2 doubles, defeating senior Sarah Moore (Plano, Texas/Plano East) and sophomore Maya Sayarath (St. Johnsbury, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy).

At No. 3 doubles, Mount Holyoke senior Heather Richardson (Holden, Mass./Mass. Academy of Math & Science) and sophomore Kelsey Brower (Tuckerton, N.J./Pinelands Regional) upended junior Jesse Boggis (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) and sophomore Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Gloucester), 8-3.

Cooke picked up the Lyons third point of the afternoon as she knocked off Han in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. Marlowe followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles over Sayarath and DiOrio defeated freshman Sarah Anischik (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) at No. singles, 6-1, 6-3.

"I'm very happy about our win today," said Wheaton head coach Lynn Miller. "Having lost so many players from last year's squad, our goal at the start of preseason was simply to make the playoffs. To be in the semifinals is an accomplishment for us, and if we all play well, we're certainly going to have a better showing against Wellesley than earlier this year (9-0 loss). We have defeated them the last two years, so that result was difficult for us."
