NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's tennis team had little difficulty collecting its second New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory in as many matches Saturday afternoon, as the Lyons cruised to a 9-0 shutout over Smith College on Saturday afternoon.
Wheaton, which entered today ranked 10th in the region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the league. The Pioneers are 0-2 through two NEWMAC matches.
Seniors Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, Calif./Sage Hill School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester, N.H./Central) blanked the opposition at first doubles in getting Wheaton off to a fast start.
Freshmen Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) and Madison Hartley (Charlotte, Vt./Rice Memorial) won 8-2 at second doubles, while senior Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, Mass./Manchester Essex Regional) and junior Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, R.I./Lincoln School) recorded an 8-3 victory at number three
The Lyons dominated singles play, as Teague, Cooke and DiOrio shut out their opponents in the first, third and fourth positions, respectively. Today marked DiOrio's first singles match of the fall. Geocaris yielded just three games at two, while Hartley and Van Faasen surrendered four each in the fifth and sixth slots, respectively.
Wheaton is back in action tomorrow morning for a 10:30 a.m. non-conference match in Schenectady, New York, against Union College.
