Lyons jump on top early during 4-0 shutout at Keene State

Box Score

KEENE, N.H. - The Wheaton College men's soccer team rattled off three first-half goals during Saturday's 4-0 victory at rival Keene State College at the Owl Athletic Complex.

Ranked sixth in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), Wheaton posted its third shutout to improve to 3-0-1, while Keene State fell to 3-2.  The four-goal margin marked the largest separation between the teams in 14 meetings.

Senior co-captains David Ferriero (Medway, Mass./Medway) and Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon School) scored the first two goals on rebounds following restarts, with Moreira collecting the game-winner in the ninth minute and Ferriero recording his second goal in as many games.

Sophomore Will Nesbitt (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) took advantage of Owl junior goalkeeper Paul Blackmer (Boylston, Mass./Tahanto Regional) being pulled off his line, tacking on Wheaton's third goal with just under four minutes to play before the break.

Senior Alex Redding (Newton, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon School) tacked on extra insurance in the 67th minute, firing his shot into the lower corner of the net on a feed from classmate Josh Solomon (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional), who finished with two assists.

Shots and corner kicks were even at 14 and five apiece, respectively.  Senior goalie Chris Smart (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) was credited with six saves for his second shutout of the fall, while Blackmer turned aside four shots.

The Lyons continue their eight-game road stretch at Roger Williams University tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.
