AMHERST, MA- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team cut its
deficit to three goals early in the second half before host Amherst
College pulled away en route to a 13-5 victory on Thursday night at
Gooding Field.
The Lyons slip to 3-6 with the non-conference setback, while the
Lord Jeffs, who came into this evening's action receiving national
votes in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches
Association (IWLCA) poll, improved to 6-2.
Wheaton sophomore Hailey Colburn
(Concord, NH/Concord) had a hand in four of her team's
five goals, finishing with two tallies and a pair of assists, while
classmates Sydney Ferguson
(Jamestown, RI/North Kingstown), Katie Powers
(Ashburnham, MA/Cushing Academy) and Brittany Whynot
(Fountain Hills, AZ/Fountain Hills) also scored.
Junior goalie Marianna
Marcellino (Milton, MA/Thayer Academy) was credited
with three stops in a little more than 20 minutes while taking the
loss, and freshman Stephanie Hoomis
(Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) had five saves.
Amherst senior Hannah Walker (Greenwich, CT/Convent of
the Sacred Heart) led all scorers with four goals, while
junior Kelley Trapp (Monterey, CA/Santa Catalina)
also accounted for four points with two markers and two
assists. Sophomore Lamia Harik (Rye
Brook, NY/Hackley School) turned aside four shots in net.
Powers' goal 1:59 in gave Wheaton an early edge before the Lord
Jeffs used a 4-0 run over 4:12 for a 4-1 lead that held up until
Colburn scored at 18:20 to make it 4-2. Amherst responded
with three unanswered goals for a 7-2 advantage by 7:46 before
Colburn found Whynot for the Blue and White's third goal with 2:21
left before intermission.
A Colburn feed to Ferguson at the 23:41 mark of the second half
trimmed Wheaton's deficit to three at 7-4, but the Lyons would get
no closer, as Amherst rattled off six of the game's final seven
goals. Colburn's free-position tally with 17:44 to play that
made the score 9-5 proved to be Wheaton's final strike, as the Lord
Jeffs scored four times in the last 11:37.
Wheaton takes the weekend off and will return to competition on
Tuesday for a home game against New England Women's and Men's
Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT) at 5:00 p.m. The Lyons will play on Keefe
Field for just the second time in 10 games.
