NORTHAMPTON, MA- Behind a late surge, the Wheaton College
women's lacrosse team pulled away from Smith College for a 17-10
victory on Saturday in New England Women's and Men's Athletic
Conference (NEWMAC) play.
The Lyons, who downed the Pioneers for the 12th time in the last
13 meetings, improved to 5-7 overall and 2-2 in the league. Smith
is now 3-10 and 0-4.
Sophomore Hailey Colburn (Concord, NH/Concord)
netted six goals while adding two assists for Wheaton, junior
Tess Meyer (Concord, NH/Concord) had four markers,
and sophomore Brittany Whynot (Fountain Hills, AZ/Fountain
Hills) provided a hat trick. Classmate Katie Powers (Ashburnham, MA/Cushing Academy) scored once and
added two helpers. In net, junior Marianna Marcellino
(Milton, MA/Thayer Academy) made eight saves in a little
more than 44 minutes to pick up the victory, and freshman
Stephanie Hoomis (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) had four
stops in relief.
Senior Kaitlyn Murdough (Hinsdale, NH/Northfield Mount
Hermon School) netted three goals for Smith, while
sophomore Meaghan Fileti (Palos Verdes Estates, CA/Palos
Verdes) notched two markers and an assist. Freshman
Meredith Kallfelz (North Easton, MA/Oliver Ames)
made 13 saves between the pipes.
Three quick goals, including two by Colburn, had the visitors up
3-0 just 3:38 into the contest, but the Pioneers scored the next
two and never trailed by more than four goals during the opening
stanza. Sudbey's first marker, at 10:01, gave Wheaton its largest
lead of the half at 6-2.
A Murdough marker brought the Pioneers to within 7-5 at 28:33 of
the second period before Wheaton began pulling away, scoring five
straight goals in a 9:49 stretch. Five different Lyons scored, with
Sudbey's tally making the score 12-5 with 17:32 remaining. However,
Smith clawed to within 12-9 by 15:02, as the hosts netted four
goals in a matter of 1:23.
From there, Wheaton completed the contest on a 5-1 run over the
last 10:44, with Colburn, Meyer and Whynot each tallying during a
short 1:56 burst.
The Lyons complete their regular season slate next week with a
trio of games, beginning with a home contest against NEWMAC foe
Wellesley College on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
