NORTON, MA- Three players netted hat tricks to lead Wheaton
College past Emerson College, 19-7 on Thursday at Keefe Field in
non-conference women's lacrosse action. Now 4-7, the Lyons snapped
the 6-4 Lions' three-game winning streak, as Emerson's prior three
losses this spring had come by a total of five goals.
Sophomore Hailey Colburn (Concord, NH/Concord)
notched three goals and three assists, as her 21 helpers this
season are the most by a Lyon in 10 years, while classmate
Sydney Ferguson (Jamestown, RI/North Kingstown,
RI) had three markers and an assist, and junior
Kathryn Sudbey (Sandy Hook, CT/Newtown) added a
hat trick.
Sophomores Sabrina Fiori (Newton, MA/Beaver Country Day
School), Katie Powers (Ashburnham, MA/Cushing
Academy) and Brittany Whynot (Fountain Hills,
AZ/Fountain Hills) added two goals and a helper apiece.
Freshman Kristen Palmer (East Dorset, VT/Burr and Burton
Academy) scored once with an assist, while junior
Marianna Marcellino (Milton, MA/Thayer Academy),
the first of three keepers, earned the win.
Junior Maeghan Ross (Wrentham, MA/King Philip
Regional) tallied four times for the Lions, while
classmate Katie Dodge (West Newbury, MA/Pentucket
Regional) scored twice. Freshman Emily Saeger
(Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) made nine saves.
Dodge's pair of goals had the squads tied at two 3:26 into the
contest, but a team goal for Wheaton 19 seconds later ignited a 7-0
run, as Colburn's pass from behind the net was inadvertently
knocked in by an Emerson player. Five players tallied during the
stretch, with Fiori finding the back of the goal twice, including
recording the game-winner.
After the Lyons turned a 10-3 halftime advantage into a 13-4
lead by 23:54 of the second stanza, with three players tallying in
a 2:13 stretch, Emerson cut its deficit back to seven with 18:33 to
go. However, Wheaton kept the visitors off the board for the next
13:42 while scoring five times. Sudbey tallied twice during the
run.

Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday at Smith College at 1:00
