NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team jumped out
to a 3-1 advantage early in the first half before succumbing to a
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) 9-0 run during a 10-3
loss in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC)
play on Tuesday at Keefe Field.
Despite holding the Engineers to their lowest offensive output
of the season, the Lyons dropped their third straight game to MIT
while falling to 3-7 on the season and 1-2 in league play.
The Engineers won for the third consecutive time to improve to 7-3
and 2-1.
Wheaton sophomore Sabrina Fiori (Newton, MA/Beaver
Country Day School) scored the game's first two goals and
the initial two tallies of her career, while classmate Hailey
Colburn (Concord, NH/Concord) finished with a goal and
an assist. Sophomore Katie Powers (Ashburnham,
MA/Cushing Academy) had a helper, and junior Marianna
Marcellino (Milton, MA/Thayer Academy) stopped 12
shots between the pipes.
Sophomore Katie Kauffman (Olney, MD/Sherwood)
paced all scorers with four goals for the Engineers, while senior
Casey Flynn (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation
Prep) turned in two markers and an assist. Junior
Kelly Duncan (Rockville Centre, NY/Sacred Heart
Academy) also scored twice, and sophomore goalie
Allison Hamilos (Medfield, MA/Medfield) notched
seven saves.
Fiori converted passes from Powers at 27:11 and Colburn at 24:36
for a quick 2-0 edge before Kauffman sliced the deficit in half
3:14 later. Colburn's free-position goal with 19:32 to play
before the break proved to be Wheaton's last tally, as the Lyons
were held off the board for the final 49:31. Kauffman found
the back of the net a second time at 12:36 of the first half before
junior Stephanie Leger (Vienna, VA/James Madison)
knotted the score as time expired.
In the second half, Duncan scored what proved to be the
game-winner with 22:21 remaining. Duncan, Flynn and Kauffman
recorded two goals apiece in the second stanza.
Wheaton remains at home on Thursday for a non-conference game
against Emerson College at 4:30 p.m.
