Box Score BRUNSWICK, ME- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team stood
tied at five with Bowdoin College late in the first half before
giving way to a Polar Bear offensive surge during a 16-7 setback on
Tuesday evening at Ryan Field. The Lyons slipped to 1-3, while
Bowdoin is 2-3.
Sophomore Hailey Colburn (Concord, NH/Concord)
netted at least five points for the fourth straight game for
Wheaton, finishing with two goals and three assists. Classmate
Katie Powers (Ashburnham, MA/Cushing Academy)
tallied two markers and a helper, senior Chrissy Norberg
(Winchester, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) tacked on
a pair of goals, and sophomore Brittany Whynot (Fountain
Hills, AZ/Fountain Hills) also scored.
Junior Marianna Marcellino (Milton, MA/Thayer
Academy) took the loss for the Lyons after making five
stops in nearly 35 minutes, while freshman Stephanie Hoomis
(Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) had six saves during a little more
than 25 minutes.
Sophomore Katie Herter (Topsfield, MA/Brooks
School) collected five goals and an assist for Bowdoin,
while classmates Katie Stewart (Chevy Chase, MD/Sidwell
Friends School) and Celeste Swain (Berkeley,
CA/Berkeley) each added a hat trick. Freshman Tara
Connolly (Simsbury, CT/The Gunnery) made five saves in 50
minutes for the win, as the Polar Bears held a 34-16 advantage in
shots.
The Lyons fell behind 3-0 after 6:16 of action before Powers and
Whynot scored 58 seconds apart to draw the visitors within 3-2 at
the 21:59 mark of the opening half. Bowdoin countered with the next
two markers before the Blue and White held the hosts scoreless for
more than 14 and a half minutes. In that time, Wheaton drew even,
with Colburn, Norberg and Powers combining on three goals. Powers
assisted Norberg to make it 5-3 before Colburn lent a hand on
Powers' tally at 9:23 and Norberg's tying marker with 7:52 to
go.
However, the Polar Bears scored the final five goals of the half
en route to an 11-0 run, keeping the Lyons off the board following
Norberg's tally for 30:48 until Colburn found the back of the net
at 7:03. She scored again at 1:51 to cap the scoring.
Wheaton heads into New England Women's and Men's Athletic
Conference (NEWMAC) play at Mount Holyoke College on Saturday at
1:00 p.m.
