LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team
finished its three-game, four-day trip to Florida with a
heartbreaking 12-11 loss to Connecticut College on Thursday at the
ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
The Lyons return north with a 1-2 record, while the Camels, who
picked up their second consecutive one-goal victory in three days,
improve to 2-1.
Sophomore Hailey Colburn (Concord, NH/Concord)
fell one assist shy of a 10-year-old school record for assists in a
game, as she finished with four. Colburn also scored twice in
notching her third straight game of at least six points.
Classmate Katie Powers (Ashburnham, MA/Cushing
Academy) found the back of the net five times, while
senior Chrissy Norberg (Winchester, MA/Northfield Mount
Hermon School) turned in a hat trick. Freshman
Kristen Palmer (East Dorset, VT/Burr and Burton
Academy) added a pair of assists.
Freshman goalie Stephanie Hoomis (Duxbury,
MA/Duxbury) made four saves in the loss, while junior
Marianna Marcellino (Milton, MA/Thayer Academy)
had three.
Tonight's game featured several runs, especially in the first
half, when Connecticut College answered Wheaton's initial two
scores with a 7-0 stretch over 15:03, giving the Camels a 7-2
advantage. The Lyons went scoreless for 21-plus minutes
before using a half-ending 3-0 spurt in the final 6:07 to close
within 7-5 at the intermission.
After Connecticut College opened the scoring 1:33 into the
second stanza, the Blue and White responded with two tallies to
bring the score to 8-7 with less than 20 minutes remaining.
The Camels rattled off three consecutive goals to push their lead
out to 11-7 at the 11:19 mark before Wheaton made it 11-9 by
8:10.
Connecticut College found the back of the net for the final time
at 7:16, but it proved to be enough as a pair of Powers goals
trimmed the Lyon deficit to one with 1:34 to go. Wheaton had
a chance to tie in the waning seconds, but the Camels forced a Blue
and White turnover before coming away with the ground ball to seal
the win.
The Lyons return home to face another New England Small College
Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foe on Tuesday, when they travel to
Brunswick, Maine, to take on Bowdoin College at 7:00 p.m.
