Coppola surpasses 1,400 points as Lyons lose 63-60 at Eastern Nazarene

Box Score

QUINCY, Mass. - Wheaton College men's basketball senior Anthony Coppola (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) became just the sixth Lyon to surpass 1,400 career points during Saturday night's 63-60 loss to non-conference foe Eastern Nazarene College in the teams' first meeting since the 2004-05 season.

Wheaton falls to 0-2 following a second straight loss of four points or less, while Eastern Nazarene picked up its first win to improve to 1-2.

Scoring a team-high 16 points while upping his career total to 1,416, Coppola is one point shy of Brian Zukowski '07 for fifth place on the school's all-time scoring list and six short of Mahlon Williams '95 for fourth.  Sophomore Cliften Desravines (Somerville, Mass./Taft School) turned in his first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.

The Lyons committed just 10 turnovers while forcing 15 but were outrebounded by a 40-30 margin.  Wheaton also made just 34.4 percent of its baskets, going 21-of-61 from the floor and 6-of-24 beyond the three-point stripe.  Tonight's game saw nine ties and seven lead swings.

Three Eastern Nazarene players combined to score 48 of their team's 63 points, as the Lyons had no answer for sophomore Aaron Johnson (Boston, Mass./Boston Trinity Academy), who knocked down seven three-pointers while finishing with 27 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals.  Junior Chima Ezeigbo (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) recorded 11 points and 12 boards, while freshman John Flakes (Dorchester, Mass./South Boston) had 10 markers.

After a Coppola steal and pair of free throws that made the score 60-59 in Wheaton's favor, Flakes' putback lay-up with time winding down provided the hosts with the lead for good.  The Lyons got off a jumper with eight ticks remaining, but Ezeigbo gathered the miss before icing the win with two freebies at 1.6 seconds.

Wheaton breaks from game action until Tuesday, November 30, when the Lyons head to Newport, Rhode Island, for a non-conference game at Salve Regina at 7:00 p.m.
