CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's soccer team's attempt to avenge last year's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament semifinal round loss to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) fell short on Saturday, as the Lyons dropped a 3-1 decision at Roberts Field.

Wheaton was handed its second league loss in a season for the first time since 1998.  Receiving national votes and ranked fourth in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), the Blue and White fell to 11-2-1 overall and 3-2 in league play.  MIT extended its win streak to four games in moving to 10-2 and 4-1.

Wheaton senior Colleen Liffers (Merrimac, Mass./Pentucket Regional) knotted the game at one with a goal off a corner kick in the 58th minute, but it wasn't enough as the Engineers scored twice in the final 22:30.  Lyon freshman goalie Kerry Condon (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson Regional) was given just her second loss after posting four saves.

MIT, which also scored off a corner, was led by sophomores Emily Kuo (Chicago, Ill./University of Chicago Laboratory) and Merricka Livingstone (Palm Bay, Fla./West Shore).  Kuo tallied the game's first and last goals, with Livingstone assisting both, while sophomore goalie Meghan Wright (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) made seven saves in the win.

Kuo's goal 1:53 into play stood up as the first half's only tally, as it took nearly 56 minutes before Liffers' header found the back of the net thanks to a feed from freshman Kristina Braga (Lowell, Mass./Lowell).  The Engineers' game-winner came at 67:30 and was followed by Kuo's final marker at 81:02.

The Lyons break from conference play on Tuesday when they welcome Bowdoin College to Mirrione Stadium in a 3:00 p.m. start.
