Lyons stay perfect in league play following 9-0 shutout of Babson

NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's tennis team remained perfect in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play following Tuesday's 9-0 triumph over visiting Babson College inside Beard Field House.

A winner of five matches in a row, Wheaton, which is ranked 10th regionally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), improved to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the NEWMAC as the Lyons are seeking their first undefeated conference mark in school history.  Suffering just its second loss of the fall, Babson slips to 5-2 and 3-2.

Regionally-ranked seniors Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, Calif./Sage Hill School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester, N.H./Central) continued their torrid pace with an 8-2 victory in the top doubles position, as the tandem improved to 8-0 in dual matches this season.

Freshmen Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) and Madison Hartley (Charlotte, Vt./Rice Memorial) also stayed unbeaten through eight matches with an 8-3 win at second doubles, while senior Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, Mass./Manchester Essex Regional) and junior Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, R.I./Lincoln School) matched their first-year teammates with an 8-3 triumph at number three.

Teague and Hartley clinched the team victory for the Lyons, each yielding just one game at first and fifth singles, respectively.  Raising her record in dual play to 8-0, Cooke won 6-3, 6-0 in the third slot, Van Faasen notched a 6-2, 6-2 victory at six, while DiOrio collected a 6-3 win in the opening set at four and led 4-3 during the second set before her opponent was forced to retire.

The tightest match of the day came at second singles between Geocaris and junior Rebecca Stone (Dover, Mass./Dover-Sherborn).  After dropping a 7-6 tiebreaker in the first set, Geocaris responded with a match-tying 6-3 triumph in the second set before recording a 10-3 victory in the deciding super tiebreaker.

The Lyons travel to South Hadley on Saturday to take on league opponent Mount Holyoke College at 1:00 p.m.
