Box Score BOSTON, MA- Freshman Cassey Muse (Candia,
NH/Central) continued a torrid start to her college career
with a goal and an assist during the Wheaton College women's soccer
team's 4-0 victory over Emmanuel College on Wednesday night at
Roberto Clemente Field.
The Lyons, who are receiving votes in the National Soccer
Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll and are ranked
fourth in New England, improved to 3-0, while the Saints fell to
1-1. Fresh off of opening the season by downing a pair of 2008 NCAA
Tournament qualifiers, Wheaton knocked off a squad that advanced to
last year's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament
final.
Junior Christina Bertrand (Agawam,
MA/Cathedral), sophomore Jessica Stuart (Weymouth,
MA/Weymouth) and freshman Anna Emery (Dallas,
TX/Bishop Lynch) also scored, with Emery's goal her first
as a collegian. Sophomore keeper Lindsay Leddy (Warwick,
RI/Wheeler School) notched the victory behind one save
before classmate Erin Cawley (West Springfield, MA/West
Springfield) stopped two shots in 11 minutes of
relief.
Muse, who now has two game-winners among her four goals this
fall, ended the stalemate during the 26th minute off a helper from
her twin sister, freshman defender Jordan Muse (Candia,
NH/Central), who notched her first career point on the
play. In the 32nd minute, Bertrand tallied her second marker of the
season off junior Emily Hough's (Norwich,
VT/Hanover) feed. It was Hough's fifth helper of the
fall.
During the second half, Stuart tallied in the 51st minute, and
Emery made it 4-0 in the 73rd minute thanks to Cassey Muse's
helper. The Lyons had outshot the Saints, 20-2 by halftime and
finished with a 31-4 advantage for the game. Emmanuel freshman
keeper Jessica D'Ottavio (Pawling, NY/Pawling)
made 14 saves.
Wheaton is back in action Saturday when it hosts Worcester State
College at 12:00 p.m.
