BOSTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team posted its
second sweep in as many days Saturday afternoon, as the Lyons
delivered a 9-0 triumph over Simmons College in non-conference
action on the Winsor School Courts.
Wheaton sandwiched a couple of decisive doubles wins around a
hard-fought victory in the second position, where senior
Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) and
junior Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex
Regional) gutted out a 9-7 win.
Sophomores Rosalyn Chesky (South Hadley, MA/Wilbraham
& Monson Academy) and Allesandra DiOrio
(Cumberland, RI/Lincoln School) cruised to an 8-2 triumph
at number-three doubles, while juniors Sarah Geocaris
(Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) earned an 8-4 win in the
top spot.
Teague blanked her foe at second singles, Knies allowed just one
game in the fifth position, while DiOrio surrendered three games in
the opening set of her straight-set victory at four. Geocaris
and Van Faasen each overcame a tough opening set at first and third
singles, respectively, before winning decisively in the second set,
and Chesky needed a pair of tiebreakers to slip past her opponent
at number six.
The Lyons return home this Wednesday to face Brandeis University
at 4:00 p.m.
