NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team began its
fall season on a high note Friday afternoon, as the Lyons shut out
visiting Salve Regina University, 9-0 on the Clark Tennis
Courts.
Three convincing doubles victories pushed Wheaton to a quick 3-0
advantage, with senior Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North
Salem) and sophomore Allesandra DiOrio
(Cumberland, RI/Lincoln School) sweeping their foes at
number two.
Juniors Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill
School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester,
NH/Central) recorded an 8-1 triumph in the top doubles
spot, while junior Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester,
MA/Manchester Essex Regional) and sophomore
Rosalyn Chesky (South Hadley, MA/Wilbraham & Monson
Academy) captured an 8-2 win at three.
In singles action, Teague and DiOrio blanked the opposition at
two and four, respectively, Van Faasen yielded one game in the
third position, and Geocaris gave up two at number one. Knies
posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the fifth spot, while Chesky completed
the sweep with a 6-2, 6-3 win at number six.
Wheaton is back in action tomorrow morning for a non-conference
road match at Simmons College. Action is slated to begin at
11:00 a.m.
