QUINCY, MA- Junior Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA/Northfield
Mount Hermon School) capped a three-goal, seven-point day
with two second-half markers, as the Wheaton College men's soccer
team scored four times in a 7:28 stretch to snap a tie en route to
a 7-2 victory at Eastern Nazarene College's Bradley Field on
Wednesday.
The Lyons, who are receiving votes in the National Soccer
Coaches Association of America's (NSCAA) national poll and stand
fourth in the region, moved to 8-1-1, while the hosts slipped to
0-8. In the first series meeting since 1993, Wheaton improved to
3-0 against the Lions.
With seven points, Moreira notched the most by a Lyon since
Dan Antoniuk '03 on September 30, 2000, falling
one short of the school record. He also joined Antoniuk as the
second Wheaton player with two career hat tricks despite playing a
little more than 20 minutes. With 29 career markers, Moreira moved
into a tie for sixth in program history.
Junior Josh Solomon (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro
Regional), sophomore Conor Finn (Kennebunk,
ME/Kennebunk) and freshman Malcolm Eaton (Ayer,
MA/Saint Paul's School) also scored for Wheaton, with
Eaton's going down as his first in college fewer than three minutes
after entering his initial game.
Senior Adam Sussman (Swampscott, MA/Swampscott)
added a pair of assists, while junior Cole Davidson
(Needham, MA/Salisbury School) had three stops in more
than 65 minutes to earn the win. Classmate Chris Smart
(Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) made one save.
For Eastern Nazarene, sophomore Chris Scearbo
(Georgetown, MA/Masconomet Regional) tallied twice, while
junior Andrew Trice (Quincy, MA/South Shore Christian
Academy) made four saves in a little more than 70 minutes
between the pipes.
Moreira struck first for the Lyons after just 7:40 of play in
the first half, but Scearbo collected a misplayed clear and knotted
the contest 2:36 later. Finn sent Wheaton into the intermission
with a 2-1 lead after converting a Sussman through ball during the
22nd minute.
Scearbo made it 2-2 at 47:22, but the visitors countered with
four quick goals. Moreira blasted home the winner off of sophomore
Chris Thomas' (Cumberland, ME/Phillips Academy)
free-kick pass at 50:43, Solomon scored at 53:20 after touches from
Moreira and Sussman, and Moreira buried a penalty kick at 57:41. An
own goal 30 seconds later made it 6-2, and Eaton tallied with 4:17
remaining in regulation.
Wheaton remains on the road for a Saturday contest with Brandeis
University, which will be played under the lights beginning at 7:00
p.m.
