Box Score BRUNSWICK, ME- Wheaton College sophomore Jessica Stuart's (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) goal with 8:24 remaining
pushed the 24th-ranked Lyons to a 1-0 victory over Bowdoin College
in non-conference women's soccer action on Saturday at Pickard
Field.
Wheaton, which entered today ranked 24th nationally and fourth
regionally in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of
America (NSCAA) polls, stayed unbeaten at 7-0, while the Polar
Bears slipped below .500 to 1-2.
Stuart's goal went down as unassisted, while sophomore keeper
Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, RI/Wheeler School) matched
her season save total coming into today with six stops. She
now has two shutouts on the season, as the Lyons edged the hosts in
shots and corner kicks at 15-11 and 5-2, respectively.
A slow start for Wheaton was combated by early offensive
pressure from Bowdoin, which took seven of the game's first nine
shots en route to a 9-6 advantage at intermission. The Lyons
bounced back in the second half, firing off nine of the stanza's 11
shots.
Wheaton had a golden opportunity to break the stalemate with 10
minutes to go when freshman Cassey Muse's (Candia,
NH/Central) shot was stopped by junior goalie Kat
Flaherty (Fairfield, CT/Lauralton Hall), whose deflection
went back to Lyon sophomore Emily Vincunas (Granville,
MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy). Vincunas lined
up her shot only to be blocked by a Bowdoin player.
Just two minutes later, a flurry of action in the Bowdoin third
resulted in a loose ball that Stuart managed to get to first.
Stuart's ensuing shot was lofted just over the reach of Flaherty
and under the crossbar to give the Lyons the lead. With 2:30
to play, Leddy made a diving stop off a Polar Bear header to clinch
the victory. Flaherty was credited with 12 saves in the
loss.
Wheaton stays on the road Wednesday to face its second straight
New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foe in Tufts
University at 4:30 p.m.
