Wheaton overcomes doubles deficit to overtake host Mount Holyoke, 6-3

SOUTH HADLEY, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team bounced back from a 2-1 doubles deficit to overtake host Mount Holyoke College, 6-3 during Saturday afternoon's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener at the Mount Holyoke Tennis Courts.

The visiting Lyons, who are ranked 12th in the Northeast by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), improved to 3-1, while Mount Holyoke opened play today.

Juniors Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) put Wheaton in control early thanks to an 8-0 victory in the top doubles slot.  However, the visitors dropped an 8-2 decision in the third spot before the second-doubles duo of junior Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex Regional) and sophomore Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, RI/Lincoln School) lost in a tiebreaker.

The Lyons responded with victories in five of six singles matches to seal the team triumph.  Teague shut out her third opponent of the season at second singles, DiOrio surrendered just one game at number four, and Geocaris posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory at one.

Sophomore Rosalyn Chesky (South Hadley, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) sandwiched 6-4 and 6-2 wins around a 6-3 setback during a three-set victory at fifth singles, while Van Faasen overcame a first-set deficit with a pair of 6-4 victories at three.

The Lyons are back in action tomorrow afternoon with a non-league road match against Division I University of Rhode Island at 3:00 p.m.
