SOUTH HADLEY, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team
bounced back from a 2-1 doubles deficit to overtake host Mount
Holyoke College, 6-3 during Saturday afternoon's New England
Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener at the Mount
Holyoke Tennis Courts.
The visiting Lyons, who are ranked 12th in the Northeast by the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), improved to 3-1, while
Mount Holyoke opened play today.
Juniors Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill
School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester,
NH/Central) put Wheaton in control early thanks to an 8-0
victory in the top doubles slot. However, the visitors
dropped an 8-2 decision in the third spot before the second-doubles
duo of junior Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester
Essex Regional) and sophomore Allesandra DiOrio
(Cumberland, RI/Lincoln School) lost in a tiebreaker.
The Lyons responded with victories in five of six singles
matches to seal the team triumph. Teague shut out her third
opponent of the season at second singles, DiOrio surrendered just
one game at number four, and Geocaris posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory at
one.
Sophomore Rosalyn Chesky (South Hadley, MA/Wilbraham
& Monson Academy) sandwiched 6-4 and 6-2 wins around a
6-3 setback during a three-set victory at fifth singles, while Van
Faasen overcame a first-set deficit with a pair of 6-4 victories at
three.
The Lyons are back in action tomorrow afternoon with a
non-league road match against Division I University of Rhode Island
at 3:00 p.m.
