NORTON, MA- Freshman Cassey Muse (Candia,
NH/Central) scored twice in her collegiate debut,
including netting the winner 57 seconds into the contest, sending
the Wheaton College women's soccer team past Roger Williams
University, 4-0 on Tuesday at Mirrione Stadium in each team's
season opener.
In a match-up of 2008 NCAA Tournament qualifiers, the Lyons
peppered a defense that yielded only three goals during all of the
previous regular season and finished last fall ranked first in
Division III in shutouts and second in goals against average.
Junior Emily Hough (Norwich, VT/Hanover) added
three assists for Wheaton, moving into ninth place in program
history for career points with 80. Classmate Christina Bertrand (Agawam, MA/Cathedral) turned in a goal and an
assist, while junior Lauren Caney (West Springfield,
MA/West Springfield) also found the back of the net.
Sophomore Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, RI/Wheeler
School) worked the first 80 minutes for the win before
classmate Erin Cawley (West Springfield, MA/West
Springfield) made two saves in her first college
appearance. The hosts finished with an 18-6 advantage in shots
while recording six of the game's eight corner kicks. For Roger
Williams, senior Jen Garside (Londonderry,
NH/Londonderry) made seven stops.
Wheaton's offense came out firing, as Bertrand found Muse for a
tally at 57 seconds. Hough played a hand in each of the final three
goals, dishing off to Caney at 15:55 before the Lyons scored twice
in a 7:57 span of the second half. Muse tallied again in the 54th
minute, while Bertrand found the back of the net in the 62nd
minute.
The Blue and White is off until Saturday, when the Lyons travel
to nationally-ranked Western Connecticut State University. The
Colonials are ranked 25th in the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA) preseason poll.
