Box Score NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's basketball team yielded
just five second-half field goals to Connecticut College but saw
the Camels shoot 20-of-25 from the charity stripe during their
67-53 victory over the Lyons on Tuesday evening in Emerson
Gymnasium. Wheaton slipped to 3-3 after winning four of the prior
five meetings, while the Camels are 3-4.
Sophomore Anthony Weeks (Fitchburg, MA/Worcester
Academy) led Wheaton with 11 points, hitting 6-of-8
free-throw tries, while junior Anthony Coppola (Watertown,
MA/Watertown) had 10, moving into seventh in program
history with 1,089 in his career. Freshman Brian Johnson
(Roxbury, MA/Brimmer and May School) snagged six
rebounds.
Sophomore Demetrius Porter (Virginia Beach, VA/Salisbury
School) notched 19 points and six rebounds for Connecticut
College, while junior Dean Lampe (Hamilton, MA/Brooks
School) added 13 points and six caroms. Sophomore
Brian Mahoney (Quincy, MA/Boston College) turned
in 12 points, while senior Shavar Bernier (Dover,
NH/Bridgton Academy) contributed 10 points, five boards
and four assists.
The Camels led by as many as 14 points midway through the second
half before Lyon sophomore Bruno Naylor (Los Angeles,
CA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) hit consecutive hoops,
making it 49-42 with 7:23 remaining. Wheaton came within seven
points on four other occasions but no closer despite holding the
visitors to 5-of-12 shooting in the second stanza, including 1-of-6
from three-point range after the Camels shot 8-of-12 from deep in
the first period. However, Connecticut College scored 20 of its 31
second-half points on free throws.
Porter scored the first six points of the game by 17:03 of the
first stanza, and the Camels made it 16-8 before the Lyons rallied.
A 10-0 run that took 3:03 to elapse put the hosts ahead by an 18-16
count with 7:48 left, as Weeks scored the final five points.
However, Connecticut College knocked down three-pointers on four of
its next five possessions to grab a 28-18 advantage by 4:46, with
Mahoney hitting the first and last treys during the 12-0 run.
Wheaton countered with five straight points, as a pair of Weeks
free throws at 3:46 made it 28-23, but the visitors carried a 36-26
advantage into halftime. The Lyons committed only seven turnovers
in the opening half while shooting 8-of-10 from the charity stripe
and holding the Camels without a free-throw try, but the visitors
shot 51.9 percent.
Coppola hit a three at 19:20 of the second half to bring the
Lyons within 36-29 before a low-scoring next four-plus minutes
ensued, with the Camels leading 41-29 by 14:54. Freshman
P.J. Walters (Hempstead, NY/Saint Dominic) broke
Wheaton's scoreless drought with a lay-up at 13:48 and added two
free throws to make it 41-33 at 13:18, but the Camels soon led by
14.
Wheaton begins a five-game stretch during which it takes on four
2009 NCAA Tournament qualifiers when it travels to Elms College on
Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
