WORCESTER, MA- Five different players scored to lift the Wheaton
College women's soccer team past host Worcester Polytechnic
Institute (WPI), 5-0 on Tuesday evening at Alumni Field. The Lyons
posted their fifth straight shutout, seventh in eight games and
ninth of the fall.
The Blue and White, which is receiving votes for the National
Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll and
stands fourth in New England, improved to 12-1 overall and 3-0 in
the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC),
while WPI slipped to 4-8 and 0-3. The Lyons are 19-1 all time
against the Engineers.
Senior Lyndsey McManus (Marshfield,
MA/Marshfield) turned in a goal and an assist for Wheaton,
while juniors Christina Bertrand (Agawam,
MA/Cathedral) and Alessia Viscomi (Newton,
MA/Newton North) and freshmen Samantha Cronin
(Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield) and Cassey Muse
(Candia, NH/Central) also found the back of the net.
Sophomore keeper Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, RI/Wheeler
School) made one save in a little more than 77 minutes
before classmate Erin Cawley (West Springfield, MA/West
Springfield) completed the shutout by recording a stop. A
pair of Engineers combined for three saves, as the Lyons outshot
the hosts, 17-3 and took six of the game's nine corner kicks.
The Wheaton defense stifled WPI for much of the night, yielding
the first shot of the game after just 39 seconds but not allowing
another try until the 74th minute. Offensively, the Lyons mustered
little until sophomore Emily Vincunas (Granville,
MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) was fouled in the box
during the 43rd minute, and Viscomi buried the ensuing penalty kick
at 42:58 for what stood up as the game-winner.
With the next shot of the game, Bertrand collected a bad
clearing attempt and rung the ball off the post and in during the
48th minute. McManus then drilled home a shot from more than 25
yards out at 61:26 before playing a hand in a 65th-minute
tally.
After taking a crossing pass from sophomore Bailey Bowling (Littleton, CO/Littleton), McManus touched the
ball to Cronin, who netted her first college tally at 64:41. Muse
tacked on a 79th-minute marker.
In a rematch of last year's NEWMAC Tournament championship game,
the Lyons head to Springfield College on Saturday for a 2:30 p.m.
contest. The Pride is fifth in the regional poll.
