NORTON, MA- Freshman Cassey Muse (Candia,
NH/Central) scored twice, breaking a scoreless deadlock
just before halftime to send the Wheaton College women's soccer
team on its way to a 5-0 victory over the United States Coast Guard
Academy during New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference
(NEWMAC) play on Homecoming Saturday in a rain-soaked Mirrione
Stadium.
The Lyons, who are receiving national votes from the National
Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and are fourth in the
region, blanked their fourth consecutive opponent while improving
to 11-1 overall and 2-0 in the league. The Bears fell to 2-7 and
0-2.
In addition to Muse's offensive effort, junior Christina Bertrand (Agawam, MA/Cathedral) scored while picking up an
assist, and senior Rosie Levy (Torrance, CA/Chadwick
School) and freshman Keely Angelo (Atlanta,
GA/Paideia School) each found the back of the net. The
marker was Angelo's first as a collegian. Sophomore Emily Vincunas (Granville, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy)
tallied a pair of assists.
Sophomores Erin Cawley (West Springfield, MA/West
Springfield) and Lindsay Leddy (Warwick,
RI/Wheeler School) combined on the shutout, with Leddy
earning the win, as Wheaton held advantages of 45-1 in shots and
10-1 in corner kicks. Sophomore keeper Mary Mills (Saint
Louis, MO) was tremendous in net for Coast Guard while
making 10 stops.
During the opening half, Mills kept the game scoreless by
tipping away a soft point-blank shot from Bertrand in the 12th
minute before the Lyons hit the crossbar twice in a
five-and-a-half-minute stretch. In the 43rd minute, junior back
Alessia Viscomi (Newton, MA/Newton North) sent a
long free kick to Muse, who tapped a shot in at 42:04 to break the
stalemate. Less than 30 seconds later, Muse nearly made it 2-0, but
Mills went high for a save, swatting the shot off the goal line
with one hand while falling backwards in mid-air.
Muse padded Wheaton's advantage in the 52nd minute, running on
to a long Vincunas cross and finishing at 51:50. Vincunas was
stopped on the doorstep by Mills a little more than nine minutes
later, but Bertrand gathered the rebound and sent the ball over a
defender into the otherwise empty net at 61:12. Levy tallied off a
Bertrand feed just 1:53 later.
In the 74th minute, freshman Samantha Cronin
(Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield) crossed a corner kick that
eluded the Coast Guard defense and Mills, and Angelo was on the
back end to knock the ball home at 73:11.
Wheaton hits the road for its next two games, beginning with a
NEWMAC contest on Tuesday at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI)
at 7:00 p.m.
