WELLESLEY, MA- The Wheaton College field hockey team wrapped up
its regular season slate on Tuesday with a 3-1 setback at Wellesley
College, which earned at least a share of the New England Women's
and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season title. The
Lyons are 6-11 overall and 2-6 in the league, while the Blue
improved to 11-7 and 6-2.
Sophomore Emily Asack (Stoughton, MA/Stoughton)
scored for Wheaton, as she extended her own school records for
underclassmen to 12 goals and 31 points. Senior keeper
Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) made 13 stops,
while sophomore Bonnie Davies (Roxbury, CT/Shepaug
Valley) recorded a defensive save.
Three different players scored for the Blue, while junior
Sarina Sawyer (Wilmette, IL/New Trier) had one
stop in the Wellesley net. The hosts held advantages of 25-7 in
shots and 13-2 in penalty corners.
Despite being outshot 14-3 in the opening half, Wheaton nearly
broke on the board first, but senior Alex Block's
(Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) blast hit the inside of the post
in the 24th minute. The Blue responded with 10 of the opening
half's final 11 shots, with the hosts scoring with 57 seconds left
in the stanza.
Davies denied Wellesley a 2-0 advantage with a defensive save in
the 39th minute, but Wellesley went ahead by two at the 54-minute
mark. After Sawyer stopped a Lyon try early in the 67th minute,
Asack was there for the rebound, cutting Wheaton's deficit to 2-1
with 3:55 remaining in regulation. However, the Blue tallied the
final marker just 17 seconds later.
The Lyons will find out later tonight who they play in the first
round of the NEWMAC Tournament on Saturday, as eighth-seeded
Wheaton will either travel to Wellesley or Clark University for the
postseason contest.
