CAMBRIDGE, MA- The Wheaton College women's soccer team blanked
its third straight New England Women's and Men's Athletic
Conference (NEWMAC) opponent and sixth of the season during Tuesday
afternoon's 2-0 victory at Massachusetts Institute of Technology's
(MIT) Roberts Field.
Improving to 14-2-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the conference, the
Lyons are receiving votes in the latest National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA) poll and ranked fourth in New
England. The Engineers fell to 8-5-1 and 4-2-1.
Junior Emily Hough (Norwich, VT/Hanover) picked
up her second game-winner of the fall, scoring an unassisted tally
with 14 minutes to play, while freshman Cassey Muse
(Candia, NH/Central) scored her league-leading 14th goal
on an assist by senior Rosie Levy (Torrance, CA/Chadwick
School) with a little more than two minutes left.
Wheaton sophomore goalkeeper Lindsay Leddy (Warwick,
RI/Wheeler School), who extended her shutout streak to
337:27, made three saves while recording her sixth shutout of the
season, as the Lyons held advantages of 16-5 in shots and 2-1 in
corner kicks. MIT freshman goalie Meghan Wright
(Devon, PA/Conestoga) turned aside seven shots in the
loss.
Wright saved Wheaton's first four shots before an Engineer
player denied sophomore Emily Vincunas (Granville,
MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) at 31:35. In the
second half, Hough delivered a left-footed blast from 15 yards out
to break the stalemate 76 minutes in. Nearly 12 minutes
later, Levy sent Muse on a breakaway from midfield for the two-goal
edge.
The Lyons return home for their final two league contests of the
season, beginning with Saturday's match against Smith College at
2:00 p.m.
