BEVERLY, Mass. – Sophomore forward Vinny McGann (Chelmsford, Mass.) netted the lone goal in a 1-1 tie for No. 19 Wheaton College (Mass.) men's soccer against host Endicott College this evening at Hempstead Stadium in Beverly, Mass.
The Lyons, who are ranked in the most recent United Soccer Coaches national poll, are now 3-0-3 on the season and are unbeaten in 30 of their last 32 games, while the Gulls are 1-2-2.
Wheaton held a 17-13 margin in shots, including 12-4 in the second half, despite not scoring in the stanza. Each team was awarded six corner kicks in the match.
Endicott's lone marker came on a penalty kick late in the first half.
The Lyons got on the board in the opening half when McGann tallied his second goal of the season in the 13th minute of play. The second-year player led Wheaton with three shots – all on frame.
The Gulls pulled even in the 37th minute when sophomore forward Caden Hansen (Northborough, Mass.) converted the penalty kick for his first collegiate score to make it a 1-1 match.
Junior starting keeper Bo Carley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) stopped three of four shots in the opening 71:13 of action for Wheaton, before giving way to sophomore Patrick Butler (Glastonbury, Conn.), who extended his scoreless streak, turning away the only shot he faced in the final 18:47 of play. Graduate student goalie Colby Webber (Marshfield, Mass.) allowed a goal in the first 20:23 for Endicott, before yielding to sophomore netminder Andrew Genovese (Brookfield, Conn.), who was outstanding, denying eight shots on net for the Gulls in the final 69:37.
The Lyons return to the pitch on Saturday, September 19 when they host Salve Regina University to open the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference schedule at 2:00 p.m., while the Gulls host Nichols College on the same day at 12:00 p.m.
