 to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's water polo team in a 19-11 loss to Pennsylvania State University Behrend this afternoon to wrap up the weekend competition on the campus of Grove City College on Saturday afternoon.
Wheaton falls to 0-12 with the loss, while Penn State Behrend improves to 4-5 on the season with the win.
Gagné was the leader in terms of goal-scoring with five to mark the most of any Lyon this season, but Guge eclipsed her points total with a goal and six assists. The hextuplet of helpers set a new program record for assists in a game. Senior
Isabel Babikova (South Portland, Maine) added two goals and an assist, while sophomore
Mackenzie Kirby (Blue Ash, Ohio), junior
Amelia Brown (Acton, Mass.) and sophomore
Fiona Swift (Red Hill, Pa.) each added a goal.Â
Three different Lions scored three goals, with first year Kaitlyn True (Denton, Texas), sophomore Priscilla Gil (Chicago, Ill.) and sophomore Hope Edwards (Bloomfield, Mich.) each joining in on the honors. Junior Makenzie Rickard (Rockford, Mich.) and junior Susie Carrillo (Fresno, Calif.) both had two goals, and junior goalkeeper Monica Villasenor (San Gabriel, Calif.) made five saves in two quarters.
Gagné kicked off the game with two goals in the first quarter, joined by a score from Babikova. Gil scored twice while True and Edwards also scored for the Lions as Penn State posted their best quarter of the game right off the bat. The Lyons found themselves down 8-3, despite the hot start from Gagné.
Edwards scored twice to lead off the second quarter and had her double bolstered by goals from True, Gil and Rickard. Brown, Swift and Guge were able to respond with goals of their own, keeping the game at 13-6 into the halftime break.
Gagné and Ritting scored to lead the Lyons offense in the third quarter. The defense improved even further, keeping the opposition to just three goals in the frame. The best frame for Wheaton was the fourth and final one, as they found the back of the net three more times. Gagné netted two of the goals, and Babikova sent the third home. The defense held strong as well, keeping the Lions to three goals for the second straight quarter. The late stand was not enough, however, and Wheaton fell to Penn State Behrend 19-11.
Wheaton will return to the pool after spring break on March 28th when they take on Augustana (Ill.) at 9:00 am. Penn State Behrend will face the hosting Grove City College Wolverines later today at 5:00 pm.Â
