Water Polo Falls to Grove City, 16-6

GROVE CITY, Pa. - The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's water polo team wrapped up their first day of competition in the Collegiate Water Polo Association weekend at Grove City College with a game against the hosts, falling to the Wolverines 16-6 to finish up their Friday doubleheader.

Wheaton falls to 0-10 on the year, while Grove City College improves to 1-9 after their first win of the season.

First year Avary Guge (Winchester, Calif.) led the Lyons with two goals on eight shots. Junior Amelia Brown (Acton, Mass.), sophomore Fiona Swift (Red Hill, Pa.), first year Claudia Gagné (Orlando, Fla.) and sophomore Ryanna Ritting (Perkasie, Pa.) all added goals while first year Anduena Kraja (Chicago, Ill.) made 16 saves and two steals.

Sophomore Frances Baksa (Longwood, Fla.) was the leading scorer for Grove City with six goals. Both sophomore Emma Strahorn (Harleysville, Pa.) and senior Kiley Sill (Virginia Beach, Va.) added four goals while junior Shastyn Tihansky (Hazleton, Pa.) had two.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first quarter despite Wheaton winning the first sprint and Ritting netting a goal. The Lyons locked in for the second quarter, rattling off three goals in the frame behind Gagné, Guge and Brown. Despite the offensive outburst, the Wolverines were able to fire four past Kraja.

Wheaton failed to score in the third quarter, falling behind by five more goals as the Wolverines continued to hum along on offense. The defense tightened up for the fourth quarter and allowed the fewest goals in any frame of the game, keeping the Wolverines to just two scores. The Lyons matched their hosts' effort as Guge and Swift scored, but the surge came too late as they fell to Grove City 16-6.

Wheaton will resume play tomorrow out in Pennsylvania against Washington & Jefferson College at 8:00 a.m. Grove City will play in the following game against Connecticut College at 9:30 a.m.
